Introduction

East Anglia was an extremely populous and literate region for its time, in particular its commercial capital, the city of Norwich. By the seventeenth century Norwich was a well-established centre of literacy with one of largest and most open franchises in England. This makes Norfolk and Norwich a particularly exciting context in which to study the interaction of oral and literate culture in early modern England.
