The National Trust (charity no. 205846) was founded by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter, and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley to protect countryside and buildings in the face of rapid industrialisation. Although independent of government, the Trust is recognised by statute, and is governed by the National Trust Acts of 1907, 1919, 1937, 1953 and 1971. The Trust owns more than 300 houses and gardens, and 700 miles of coastline, in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
