Named after the Scottish philosopher, economist, and author of the Wealth of Nations, the Adam Smith Institute is a free-market think-tank. The Institute is committed to the reduction of taxation and government waste, and the increase of personal freedom. Alongside research, reports, and seminars, the Institute calculates the annual "Tax Freedom Day", the point in the year when the average earner will have earned enough to meet their taxation obligations. The Institute was founded by Madsen Pirie, Eamonn Butler and Stuart Butler, and was inspired by the theories of James Buchanan.
