Business in the Community (BITC) is a major charity, facilitating and encouraging corporate community involvement and social responsibility. Established in the context of high levels of deprivation and social unrest in the UK during the early 1980s, the charity gained support from major companies such as Barclays Bank, ICI and Marks and Spencer, under the founding chairmanship of Sir Alastair Pilkington. In 1985, HRH the Prince of Wales became (and remains) president of the organisation. In 2007, it had a membership of more than 750 companies, including 70 of the FTSE 100. Charity no. 297716, company no. 1619253. Source: Dango database of archives of non-governmental organisations at http://www.dango.bham.ac.uk/
