Garden Organic is a charity (no. 298104) promoting, researching and demonstrating organic growing. Established by journalist and horticulturalist Lawrence Mills, the charity takes its formal name from a nineteenth-century Quaker Henry Doubleday, whose quest to raise the popularity of the pomfrey plant was taken up by Mills. The body quickly diversified into organic production more generally. The current name, adopted in October 2005, is a working name only - formally the name Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA) is retained.
