Make Poverty History was an international development coalition during 2005, formed to coincide with the UK holding both the presidency of the European Union and the chair of the G8 group of industrialised countries. It called for action on debt relief, aid and the international trading system, raising public awareness through the sale of its distinctive white wristbands. The coalition was formed of 540 diverse civil society groups, including CAFOD, Help the Aged, Friends of the Earth, and Mothers' Union. While significant progress was made on the poverty agenda during 2005, many campaigners were disappointed that more was not achieved. The publicity for the coalition, timed to climax during the G8 summit in Scotland, was largely overshadowed by the combination of the Live8 concerts and the July 7th London bombings.
