Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation, with 3.5 million members worldwide. Established by Mary Sumner, the Union provides a forum for voluntary activity, social contact and mutual support, as well as promoting Christian teachings on marriage and the Christian life for families. The Union also carries out, and campaigns in favour of, international development work. A Scottish Mothers' Union was established as a separate organisation in 1890, but this was dissolved in 1983, when most remaining branches affiliated to the current body.
