Citizens Advice is a charity (no. 279057) that serves as the umbrella body of Citizens Advice Bureaux in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Citizens Advice Bureaux are independent local charities, mainly run by volunteers. The bureaux help people to resolve their problems (for example legal or financial) through the provision of free and independent advice. Citizens Advice emerged out of the National Council of Social Services. In 1980, the Scottish Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (SACAB) (now Citizens Advice Scotland), which had previously been part of Citizens Advice, became an independent organisation.
